A Timeless Blade — The Masterpiece of Ietsugu
Description
This katana was forged by Ietsugu, a name that shone brightly during Japan’s Koto (Old Sword) period.
With a blade length of 69.6 cm and a curvature of 1.6 cm, its graceful silhouette carries both the spirit of the ancients and the breath of the craftsman—a true masterpiece in every sense.
The Two Legacies of Ietsugu
There are two known lineages of swordsmiths bearing the name Ietsugu — Kaga Ietsugu and Aoe Ietsugu — both renowned masters who left their mark on history.
The Kaga Ietsugu school was so highly regarded that its works were often called Kaga Aoe, while Aoe Ietsugu carried on the proud tradition of the Bitchu Aoe school from the late Heian through the Nanbokucho period.
Judging from the grain of the steel and the character of the hamon (temper pattern), this blade is most likely a creation of Aoe Ietsugu from the Muromachi period — a work that perfectly balances tranquility and strength.
A Harmony of Stillness and Motion
The jihada (steel surface) reveals a clear itame grain with a beautiful reflection of light, while the hamon dances vividly across the edge — a splendid display of craftsmanship.
It embodies that unique resonance of “stillness and motion” found only in koto blades.
On the nakago (tang), the bold two-character signature 「家次」 proudly remains, and the refined patina of the iron speaks of the centuries it has survived.
Certified Excellence
This sword has been officially recognized by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (NBTHK) as a Hozon Token (Preserved Sword), and it comes with its authentication certificate.
It has been professionally polished and is free from any chips, rust, or flaws — a superbly preserved koto that has been beautifully revived in the modern age.
Elegant Mountings
The koshirae (mountings) are equally refined — a black-lacquered saya, an iron tsuba with inlaid gold, and a handle wrapped in deep green cord.
Within its calm elegance lies the dignity of a true samurai.
With a blade length of just over two shaku three sun, it is perfectly suited for both iai and battō, making it an ideal choice for appreciation or actual use.
A Reflection of the Samurai’s Pride
This koto by Ietsugu transcends time, shining as brightly today as it did centuries ago.
It is, quite literally, a mirror reflecting the pride of the samurai. ⚔️
