Our Concept – Why I Run This Katana Shop
A Future Where Japanese Swords Still Exist 100 Years from Now
There was a time when Japan had hundreds of active swordsmiths.
Just 10 years ago, there were around 300 licensed smiths.
Now, that number has dropped to about 170.
Even more alarming—there are only about 10 in their 30s, and just 2 or 3 in their 20s.
This means that the tradition of Japanese sword-making is facing a real threat of extinction.
As someone deeply passionate about preserving Japanese culture,
I don’t just want to sell swords—I want to help build a future where this tradition survives.
My Vision
To ensure that Japanese swords still exist 100 years from now.
To achieve that, I’ve made it my mission to use a portion of the profits from this shop to directly support the next generation of swordsmiths.

❶ Commissioning One New Katana Each Year
Every year, I commission a brand-new katana from the talented swordsmiths at Nihon Genshosha, a respected forge based in Kyotango, Kyoto.
This allows the smiths to focus on their craft and ensures that new blades are being created—not just old ones sold.
It’s a small but meaningful way to help keep the tradition alive.

❷ Building a System to Train the Next Generation
I also plan to help create an environment where aspiring swordsmiths can train and grow, through initiatives such as:
- Building a dormitory for live-in apprentices
- Developing language support programs for international students
- Exploring scholarship options for young people who wish to pursue this path
Without new makers, there can be no future for Japanese swords.
Preserving the craft means investing in the people who carry it forward.
Every Purchase Supports This Future
When you buy from this shop, you’re not just purchasing a sword—
you’re supporting the future of an endangered cultural tradition.
That one powerful, beautiful blade in your hands becomes part of a much larger story—
a story that could inspire the next generation of swordsmiths.
A future where Japanese swords still exist.
That’s the future I’m working toward—and I’d be honored if you walked that path with me.
